Binaural Night Walks

binaural Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset

Finally after thinking about it for a while I decided to try the Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset. These earphones are equipped with omnidirectional microphones that capture the sounds of your environment just as your ears would, allowing you to make binaural/3D field recordings.

They are both headphones and microphones, and use Apogee’s PureDigital Technology. The response is amazing. The disadvantage is that they are designed to be portable, that is, for mobile devices. And unfortunately, they’re only available for the iOS devices. After testing them, I have realised that the mic freq. response is only up to 18K Hz, despite the fact that the technical information says it’s up to 22K. I have to run even more tests and check more accurately though.

The first thing that came to my mind was to create a mini-series of field recordings to test and experiment with ‘Night Walks’ (i & ii). So soon after receiving them I went out to walk and capture the soundscapes where I was.

The result is uploaded in Soundcloud. In a hearing with a good headphone you can perceive all the sound events happening around me when I was recording and relive them in first hand. I did a careful mixing and editing of all the recordings.

‘Night Walks (ii)’, is is particularly special for me, it is recorded in Basel, my second home, and what you can hear it is what Basel (soundly) means to me.

Put on a good headset and enjoy!
